Horse Island, linked to Sackets Harbor’s mainland by a submerged causeway, played a significant role in the 29 May 1813 Battle of Sackets Harbor. Later, lighthouse keepers and their families called it home on Black River Bay. The National Park Service and American Battlefield Trust recognize the island’s multi-national significance. New York State Parks holds a unique island central to “Our Whole Heritage.”
